The Hero’s Journey® for Young Women

Based in the Monongahela National Forest, near Spruce Knob, WV

For young women ages 13-18

August 2nd- 8th, 2020

– Cancelled with an Online Journey Intensive option available –

This summer, we have come up against the struggle of providing the essential safety needed to take the necessary risks of a worthy journey. We’ve had an ongoing and difficult decision-making process about holding the summer journey in West Virginia, as we have done for the past 20 years. It has become increasingly apparent to us that we cannot provide the safety needed to create the conditions for a meaningful and deep weeklong wilderness journey.

We draw young people from across the US, and even the globe, who long to be a part of something larger than ourselves; we seek out unique opportunities for shared participation in a journey that holds the necessity of risking, embraces mystery, and welcomes enchantment.

Over and over again, we place ourselves on the precipice of transformation, on a developmental edge – spaces that hold the potential for awakening and illumination on one hand, and the inevitability of pain, struggle and the disappointments of being human on the other.

We have repeatedly reviewed all possible options for being onsite as this pandemic has drawn on, and we have concluded that there are too many uncertain variables that lie beyond our control to assure physical well-being in an intimate and communal setting designed for transformational possibilities.

The ability to become ‘capable of the unexpected’ has excited and motivated us, and we are positioning ourselves to now offer an Online Journey Intensive for the young women. We will not try to replace the summer journeys we create on the mountain, but we will build and create the necessary containers and vessels needed for deep, meaningful and life-changing, transformational work – work that can only take place in a solid group experience.

In this way, the group work itself will hold a continuous thread through the week-long journey processes we have conducted now for decades.

An Orientation To The Young Women’s Journey

What is the Young Women’s Journey Intensive about?

Inside the heart of every young woman, there is a need to be recognized and a desire to be seen for who she really is – both by her peers and by older women that she respects and admires.

The Hero’s Journey ® for Young Women recognizes this deep desire that lives within. For young women, this a type of Journey is to be undertaken with others of similar age, those from different walks of life, and those who are also seeking life-giving adventures.

We offer young women an opportunity to dramatically live into a meaningful rite of passage by taking a journey that is a life-altering and life-giving experience.

Based on the work of Joseph Campbell, we draw from the map of the Hero’s Journey ® myth that has been woven through every culture and tradition since the beginning of time.

The journey is an immersion into the ancient cycle of leaving home, experiencing adventure, joining with allies, challenging fears and limiting beliefs, gaining insight, celebrating renewed vitality – then returning home to bring the gifts of their journey alive for ourselves and for others.

At times, the young women will also join with a larger circle of adult women, including the elders of our community.  They receive encouragement, strength and wisdom from older women who hold no expectations for them, and treat them with care, dignity and regard.

Young women learn more about what nurturance and respect feels like on the inside.  They learn how to rely on others in healthy ways, and also to a person other women can rely on.   They learn that what they do for themselves helps to enrich the lives of those around them.

The journey for young women brings them alive in a community with vital others, so they may be able to do the same when they return to the challenges of daily living.

Take part in a unique and exciting wilderness adventure with other dynamic young women.  Explore and examine what matters most to you.

Ask yourself these important questions:

Do the messages you receive from the people and the world around you about what a woman is supposed to be fit into your own image of who you would like to be?

What unique role or contribution would you like to make to the world, as you grow older?  What is your hope or vision for that?

Does the life you are now living give you hope for your own future, as well as for the future of our world?

What kind of support would you need in order to craft a future life that you feel is worth living?

How could you live so that your future draws on your particular strengths and interests, and also helps to develop the necessary self-worth, self-confidence, and ability to relate well with others, especially with those who differ with you?

Are you ready for a unique and exciting wilderness adventure that will bring forth unrealized physical, mental, emotional and spiritual potential from within you?
